Population structure and conservation practices of threatened species of rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia) In Kapilvastu, Nepal

Abstract

Dalbergia latifolia, locally known as Satisal, is a keystone tree species producing quality and commercial timber. Because of its strength and durability, it is highly exploited in the natural forests which resulted in the loss of its stands throughout the world. D. latifolia was listed in Appendix II of CITES in 2016 and considered as a vulnerable species according to IUCN Red List. This paper highlights the population size, different threats and issues and conservation status of D. latifolia in two different community forests; one with plantation stands and another natural pocket area; of Kapilvastu district. The population of the standing stock in natural pocket area was 200 individuals/ha. showing good sign of regeneration with 1600 seedlings and saplings per ha. Similarly, the analysis shows presence of 1,322 (per ha.) seedlings and saplings of D. latifolia in the plantation stands which concludes that the species is moderately present in both forests. The result shows human encroachment during Nepalese civil conflict period as the primary cause of its habitat degradation. Likewise, forest fire, illegal felling, open grazing, human encroachment, and tree die-back were seen as other threats in its conservation in the study area because of which different possible interventions were practiced for the conservation of the species. The result also showed that conservation and management practices from both local communities and government authorities can prevent the species from further declination.
