Abstract

Shea butter is a key non-timber forest product in sub-Saharan Africa, valued for its nutritional, medicinal, and commercial uses, yet it’s processing in southwestern Nigeria remains underexplored. This study assessed the socio-economic profile, processing practices, profitability, and determinants of Shea butter production in Oke-Ogun, Oyo State. Data from 140 processors were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and regression models. Women dominated the enterprise (86%), most aged 36–50 years (47%), with 38% having no formal education. Processing was largely traditional (88%), though 11% used semi-mechanized methods. Gross margin analysis yielded a return on investment of 1.74, with Shea contributing 38% of household income. Chi-square tests linked gender and education to processing participation, while regression showed cooperative membership, credit access, education, and semi-mechanization significantly improved profitability (R² = 0.34). The study underscores women’s central role and institutional support as critical for enhancing Shea butter processing profitability and sustainability.
