L’altérité à travers l’architecture, cas critique de l’entreprise coloniale israélienne en Palestine

Abstract

This paper proposes to revisit, through the prism of architecture, the continuities in the history of the formation of a nation – Israel – conceived both in opposition to the European diasporic past and imbued with an Orientalist vision of Palestine. The current colonial enterprise in the occupied territories spatially reflects both a complex and ambiguous relationship with this territory, but also stages otherness in order to establish its identity, with Palestinians becoming the archetypal figure of the Other. By drawing on Said's thinking, the aim is to reveal how this relationship with otherness manifests itself in the built fabric of Israeli settlements, and what their ornamental details tell us about the evolution of this relationship with the Other. The paper examines the emergence of hybridities, analysed as the expression of a society that today constructs its space against this Other and maintains it in a situation of colonial domination.

Cet article propose de revenir par le prisme de l’architecture sur les continuités de l’histoire de la constitution d’une nation - Israël - pensée à la fois en opposition au passé diasporique européen, tout en étant emprunte d’une vision orientaliste de la Palestine. L’actuelle entreprise coloniale menée en territoires occupés traduit spatialement à la fois un rapport complexe et ambigu à ce territoire, mais met également en scène une altérité pour instaurer son identité, où les Palestiniens deviennent la figure archétypale de l’Autre. En mobilisant la pensée de Saïd, il s’agit de mettre à jour la façon dont ce rapport à l’altérité se manifeste dans le tissu bâti des colonies israéliennes, et ce que leurs détails ornementaux racontent des évolutions de ce rapport à l’Autre. L’article interroge l’émergence d’hybridités, analysées comme l’expression d’une société qui aujourd’hui construit son espace contre cet Autre, et le maintient dans une situation de domination coloniale.
