Avant-propos

Abstract

The present volume proposes to dive into the meanders of the often mysterious images of the bestiary, exploring the diversity of the “beautiful creatures” that haunt our pages, our screens, our very thoughts, even and inevitably our everyday life and our culture. These representations symbolise allegories, powerful feelings, conflicts and life-lessons to humans, without forgetting to mention that they are also our guardian “angels”, the protectors of our myths, the ultimate witnesses of our history and the emissaries of our enigmatic relation with nature. This volume is aimed to explore the different aspects of the bestiary in literature and the arts (cinema) focusing on its role and place in our imaginary and our existential preoccupations. From the intelligence of certain primates to the wisdom of the owl, and the incredible cognitive disposition of the parrot, to the strength end ferocity of the lion, each of these various animal creatures contributed to perpetuate our customs and traditions, to maintain our identity and mores and our sense of belonging.

Résumé

Le présent dossier de la revue ÉLLiC rassemble neuf contributions. Toutes viennent d’horizons disciplinaires, linguistiques et culturels distincts. Certaines lisent le Coran ; d’autres lisent Orwell, Seiler, Saint-Exupéry ou Attar. Certaines convoquent la neurobiologie ; d’autres, la zoopoétique, l’écocritique ou la sémiotique. Et pourtant, toutes parlent, in fine, de cette créature qui cesse d’être une bête pour devenir un langage, une âme, une énigme. Le parcours qui structure ce recueil n’est pas arbitraire. Il obéit à une logique de passage, du sacré au symbolique, du symbolique au littéraire, du littéraire au politique et au visuel, comme si la pensée humaine, depuis ses textes fondateurs jusqu’à ses formes les plus contemporaines, n’avait cessé de répéter, sous des masques changeants, une seule et même question : que nous dit l’animal de nous-mêmes ?
