The potential impact of plant based nutrition on the metabolic syndrome and overall health: a narrative review
Abstract
Background: This review article aims to highlight the beneficial effects of plant-based nutrition as a safe, effective and sustainable nutritional intervention in the face of the increasing global prevalence of metabolic syndrome, which is characterized by a cluster of risk factors such as insulin resistance, obesity, dyslipidaemia and hypertension.
Materials and Methods: In order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the topic, a literature search was conducted using various databases and keywords related to plant based nutrition, overall health, metabolic syndrome, metabolic health. The search was limited to peer-reviewed articles published in English between 2006 and 2025. Animal model studies were excluded to focus on human research. The criteria for inclusion in this review were that studies examined the relationship between plant based nutrition and metabolic syndrome, were published in a peer-reviewed journal, and were written in English. After careful consideration, a total of 24 studies were selected for inclusion.
Results : A substantial body of literature addressing the impact of plant-based nutrition on metabolic syndrome underscores the capacity of plant-derived bioactive compounds to enhance markers of inflammation, insulin sensitivity, and lipid profiles, concurrently reducing oxidative stress. This finding suggests that a plant-based diet may have a beneficial effect on overall health.
Conclusion: Studies on this topic have shown that plant-based diets rich in dietary fibers, phytonutrients, and antioxidants significantly reduce systemic inflammation and improve metabolic parameters associated with metabolic syndrome. Synthesizing both epidemiological and clinical trial data, it is emphasized that adherence to a plant-based diet is associated with improved metabolic profiles and a reduced risk of developing metabolic syndrome.
