Abstract

Soil compaction constitutes a serious problem for the development and production of crops. This settlement is generally caused by the multiple passages of machinery, particularly in excessive moisture conditions.

In this context, a study of the soil bulk density variation as a function of the number of passages, moisture and the state of the soil (tilled or not) are studied. The density study is conducted on a plot located in Morneg-Ben Arous (Tunisa). Experimental tests applied to a sandy soil showed that the density increased as a function of the number of tractor passes and the depth soil, under different moisture levels. In fact, two passes, at a depth 20 cm, under moisture conditions varying between 3-7% and 12-16%, can increase the soil density by 12% and 37% respectively compared to the density of a tilled soil. In addition, following 3 passes, a compaction (Bulk Density =1.6g/cm3) of the wet soil (moisture 12-16%) at 40 cm depth was detected.
