L’expédition Lewis et Clark : du voyage transcontinental à l’aventure transculturelle

Abstract

From the departure from St. Louis in May 1804 to the triumphant return in September 1806, the Lewis and Clark Expedition journalists provided daily accounts of the advance of the “Corps of Discovery,” across the highly coveted territory where Thomas Jefferson intended to build an “Empire of Liberty.” However, as it was being planned, the odyssey to the Pacific Coast was primarily a virtual voyage into some unknown region, the topography of which the American president would not hesitate to model to his liking, so as to best serve his purpose. The American epic into the wilderness tested the members of the multi-cultural party, the cohesion of which was largely favored, beyond ethnic divides, by the rather hostile environment it progressed through. Thus, the transcontinental adventure appeared to trigger off some kind of unifying process, a characteristic feature of an exploration often described as an eminently transcultural “laboratory of Americanization.”

Du départ de Saint-Louis en mai 1804 au retour triomphal en septembre 1806, les diaristes de l’expédition Lewis et Clark relatent quotidiennement la progression du « Corps de la découverte », à travers le territoire tant convoité où Thomas Jefferson entend ériger un « empire de la liberté ». Mais au moment de son élaboration, l’odyssée jusqu’à la côte Pacifique est avant tout un voyage virtuel au cœur d’une contrée méconnue, dont le chef de la nation n’hésite pas à façonner à sa guise la topographie, de manière à mieux servir ses desseins. L’épopée américaine aux confins de la wilderness met à l’épreuve les membres d’une troupe multiculturelle dont l’entente, au-delà des frontières ethniques, est grandement favorisée par l’environnement parfois hostile dans lequel elle évolue. L’aventure transcontinentale semble ainsi déclencher un processus d’unification, caractéristique d’une exploration souvent décrite comme un « laboratoire de l’américanisation », à la dimension éminemment transculturelle.
