Abstract

Oxidative stress was evaluated in obese children in Tlemcen, Algeria without co-morbidities. The study selected a 40 obese children and 40 non-obese children aged 6 to 12 years. The rate of markers of oxidative damage (malondialdehyde [MDA], and plasma hydroperoxide [Hp]) and evaluation of antioxidant defense, such as the oxygen radical absorbance capacity [ORAC] and Catalase were determined. Children were categorized by the body mass index (BMI). The levels of plasmatic MDA and Hp were higher in obese children compared with non-obese children. In contrast and as expected, the values of CAT and the ORAC was decreased in obese subjects compared with control subjects. Obesity affecting children severely is related to oxidative stress. Thus, a diet rich in foods with high antioxidant capacity in addition to a low-calorie diet is essential for the treatment of obese children.
