Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths, it involves mainly
the colon and rectum. It is one of the most common malignancies in adult men and women. The
highest incidence is found essentially in economically developed countries. In Algeria, CRC is
the second most diagnosed cancer, this multifactorial disease is associated with several risk
factors such as advanced age, diabetes, genetic susceptibilities, unhealthy diet, obesity, and
smoking. Some herbal medicines have been widely used with or without chemotherapy to treat
CRC; these natural products demonstrated some efficacy in improving patients’ survival and
quality of life. In this review, we introduce the most common risk factors associated to CRC
etiology, then, we highlight the anti-CRC activity of two plants used in traditional medicine in
Algeria, which are Marrubium vulgare L. and Zingiber officinale Roscoe., and discuss potential
anti-cancer mechanisms of these plants.
